Officer's dirk to the Gordon Highlanders. Silver mounted dirk. The scabbard is leather covered and adorned with a crest marked “GORDON HIGHLANDERS EGYPT INDIA”. The hardwood handles are carved into a basket weave pattern with silver studs. Typical hilt of the Gordon Hoghlanders.

 

Etched blade with on one side sun rays, the royal (QVC) crown, GORDON HIGHLANDERS, family blazon of a flaming heart (belonging to the Turner family) with the motto Tu ne cede malis (Yield not to misfortunes). On the other side of the blade, etchings of 20 battle honours: Egmont-of-Zee, Mandora, Egypt, Seringapatam, India, Corunna, Fuentes D' Onor, Almaraz, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nive, Orthes, Peninsula, Waterloo, Delhi, Lucknow, Charasiah, Kabul 1879, Kandahar 1880, Afghanistan 1878-80.

 

Also marked HENRY/WILKINSON/PALL MALL/LONDON. Matching knife (with missing attchment) and three tine fork ensuite, both with a faceted stone set in their hilts. Dirk: 16,875 inches. Blade: 10,375 inches. Condition: Very nice blade with some staining, primarily on the back edge. Hilt is tipped slightly and has caused some chipping of the wood. Small knife ensuite is missing the retaining catch.

Ref 19. The Gordon Highlanders

  • 1881 - 1882

  • The Gordon Highlanders was created during the 1881 Army reforms by merging two highland regiments, the 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment and the 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment. These became the new unit's 1st and 2nd Battalions respectively.

    The Gordon Highlanders recruited in Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Kincardineshire and Shetland.

    • 1794 - The 100th Regiment
    • 1798 - The 92nd Regiment (known as The Gordon Highlanders)
    • 1881 - The Gordon Highlanders, upon amalgamation witt the 75th, Stirlingshire Regiment. The 92nd became the 2nd Battalion and the 75th the 1st Battalion of the newly formed Gordon Highlanders.
    • 1994 - The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons), upon amalgamation with the Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons)
    • 2004 - 4th (Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons)) Battalion of the Royal regiment of Scotland.
