Officer's dirk to The 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders). Gilt-Brass mounted dirk. With fullered blade (28.5 cm) notched along the back and double-edged at the point, brightly etched against a dull grey ground.
One one side of the blade etchings of crowned 'VR' cypher, '79', 12 battle honors: Egmont-op-zee, Egypt, Fuentes d'Onor, Salamanca, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Toulouse, Peninsula, Waterloo, Alma, Sevastapol and thistles. The other side of the slide etchings of 'VR' cypher and crown, '79', a martial trophy between lilies and thistles.
Ebonised baluster grip carved with basketweave set with brass studs (one missing) and with crossed swords and bonnet at the back, basal mounts embossed and chased with thistles, and pommel embossed and chased with oak and set with a piece of faceted glass against yellow foil, in original wood-lined black patent leather scabbard (some grazing) with mounts embossed and chased with thistles and lilies, the locket with '79' between branches of oak, by-knife and fork en suite. Blade: 28,5cm. Condition: in fine condition retaining much of its gilding. One Brass stud missing to pommel.
