Officer's dirk to the 71st Highland Light Infantry (1st Battalion). Black leather-covered scabbard with gilt brass mounts, the throat applied with King's crown, the other mounts with panels of thistles. Bog handle with carved thistles. Gilt brass ferrule molded with thistles. The blade is etched on both sides. On first side, sunrays, foliage, battle honors for Waterloo, Peninsula, Orthes, Nive, Pyrenees, Vittoria, Puentes Donor, Aimarez, Viemers, Rolai, Corunna, Cap of Good Hope and Hindoostan, QVC, bugle and numeral 71, Highland Light Infantry. The reverse is etched with a standard of arms, flags and drums, thistles, the bugle, numeral 71 and the regimental motto Nemo Me Inpune Lassecit. Mathcing knife and fork ensuite. Note that whilst the scabbard and blade are a fit, the blade shows the Queen Victoria crown, whereas the scabbard shows the King's crown in a design similar to that of a dirk of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. This might not be a match. Blade probably made by Meyer & Mortimer of Edinburgh as similar in style to other 71st dirk in this collection. Conditon: Very good. Top small knife mount slighly loose.
