Victorian Officers Brooch, circa. 1901-??. 99mm Dia. Brooch made in three parts. Plain quoit mounted thistle wreath bearing honours up to and including Modder River in turn mounted with diamond-cut Star of the Order of the Thistle, an Imperial (King's) crown superimposed on the upper point and having at its centre a French bugle horn, the twist of which encloses the monogram 'HLI'. Below the horn is a small scroll marked 'ASSAYE' and below that again, and over the lower point of the star, an elephant on ground. Stout pin to reverse.
The Battle of Modder River was an engagement in the Boer War, fought on 28 November 1899.
