Dirk to the 74th (Highland) Regiment. Ebonised baluster grip carved with basket weave set with brass studs, gilt metal mounts comprising basal mount cast and chased on each side with the regimental badge between thistles against a finely punched ground, and pommel embossed and chased with thistles and lilies en suite and set with a piece of faceted glass against light brown foil. Original wood-lined black patent leather scabbard with gilt metal mounts embossed and chased with thistles framing respectively the figure of St. Andrew (top knife mount), battle honour to 'Assaye' (middle mount) and 'VXXIV' bottom mount). Matching knife and fork en suite. Dirk: 45cm. Condition: Uncertain as to the authenticity of this dirk puchased from McTears on 27/01/2017 as the dirk looks pristine for a dirk said to be of the period 1870s.

1870s
The 74th (Highland) Regiment of Foot was a British Army line infantry regiment, raised in 1787. In 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, the 74th was amalgamated with the 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot to become the 2nd battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
